The Sacred Spud
®
In March of 1996, in my Tucson
kitchen, I found a perfectly shaped valentine potato in a ten pound sack
of otherwise ordinary potatoes. I then left for a month to my
mother’s native home, Ireland, where the Sacred Heart is the national
icon. When I returned the potato had sprouted magical fractal aorta, a
perfect gazinter and gazouter. It was a real milagro, a sacred heart
potato, far more miraculous than any Jesus in the Tortilla or Mary in
the rusty water heater. I took photographs (digital wasn’t happening
yet) thereby preserving the miraculous presence of The Sacred Spud for
the world to see.

In these times of fake miracles on grilled
cheese sandwiches and untrue political and religious leaders, the world
wants to see the calm natural presence and naked organic truth of The
Sacred Spud.
